Show CONFERENCE ONSpjER Senate Agrees to Ask for One in Connection With Philippines. WASHINGTON. Feb. 16. Soon after the Senate met today the District of Columbia appropriation bill was sent to conference, Allison of Iowa, Quay of Pennsylvania and' Cockrell of Missouri being named as conferees. Mr. Quay 6nerel a resolution which went over under the rule, declaring it to be the sense of the Senate that a date and hour prior to the 2nd of March should be fixed for a final vote upon the Statehood bill. A resolution was agreed to calling on lhe President for information regarding the present status of the Isle of Pines and what Government Is exercising authority au-thority and control In said island. Mr. Lodge then called up the Philippine Philip-pine currency bill. The amendment offered of-fered by Mr. Patterson of Colorado providing pro-viding for a conference between gold and silver standard countries to fix a commercial exchange was agreed to without division. Mr. Dubois of Idaho offered a substitute substi-tute for the entire bill and briefly explained ex-plained Its feature. The substitute was rejected and the bill was then passed. It isthe measure recommended by the House Committee on Insular Affairs but which was rejected re-jected by the House. The Senate Committee Com-mittee on the Philippines substituted for Uie House bill the measure of both com-tnittees com-tnittees and which has been recommended recommend-ed by Secretary. Root and Gov. Taft. Consideration of the Indian appropriation appropria-tion bill was then resumed. |
