ROME, April 28.-Klng Edward' arrived here from Naples yesterday . and was received by King Victor Emmanuel in person, per-son, who escorted the visiting sovereign through ths densely packed street a Their Majesties received a great popular ovation. ova-tion. The crowds along the route numbered num-bered 400.000. including 10.000 to 13,000 British and a great many Americana, as shown by the number of stars and stripes displayed. The most Imposing event of the reception recep-tion waa shortly aftar King Edward entered en-tered the Qulrlrisl. The plaaa below waa rackfd with (4,000 people who acclaimed bis Majesty frantically until he was obliged to appear twice on a balcony with Queen Helena on bis light and King Victor Emmanuel on his left and surrounded sur-rounded by Italian princes. The spectacle which met the eyes of King Edward was a remarkable one. At his feet waa the excited populace of Roma voicing the sentiments of all Italy. Against the horlson on his right was the colossal dome of St. Peter's, gllstanlng under the flaming rays of tba setting sun. while frowning above waa the hlstorta Janiculum hill, with the statue of the national hero. Garibaldi. In front was the tower of Nero, to the left the ruins of ancient an-cient Rome. King Edward, by his gestures, ges-tures, dearly expressed the deepest appreciation ap-preciation of the significance of the scene. |
