Show SCHOOLS RAISE MONEY TO COMPLETE TERM The patrons of the public .schools of the city held meetings yesterday In several of the school districts to complete com-plete arrangements for the continuance of the schools' for the remainder of the term at their own expense. In every meeting it was decided to continue the schools, the neoessary money to be raised by popular subscription. subscrip-tion. Canvassing committees were appointed ap-pointed in each of the districts, which will report to special meetings to be held next week. At the Webster school meeting, George F. Goodwin was chosen chairman chair-man and A. T. Moon secretary. The committees previously appointed reported re-ported that $800 had been secured, out of a necessary 11587. The balance is still needed, and the committees will continue to solicit subscriptions. Resolutions were passed asking the Board of Education to set apart' or create cre-ate a teachers' and maintenance fund at the beginning of the next year, which will be used for no other purpose. The teachers of the school have agreed to donate one week's salary toward the required subscription, making a donation dona-tion of 1317.50. That amount, together with the sum subscribed by the patrons, makes the total of $800. At the Hamilton school a complete statement was made to the mass meeting, meet-ing, by Principal Barton, specifying the amount of money needed to continue the school for four and for five weeks. Before last night's meeting, $300 had been raised, leaving $600 still necessary for four weeks and $700 for five weeks more of open school. An additional $100 was subscribed at the meeting. A committee com-mittee was then appointed to secure further subscriptions. An adjourned meeting will be held Thursday night. The Oquirrb school patrons elected Joseph M. Cohen as chairman, Mrs. Frank Kimball secretary, and C, H. McCoy treasurer. Two hundred and .- - fifty-seven dollars was raised at the meeting and a committee appointed to solicit. Principal Bradford' of the Jackson school received a communication from Mrs. Emily Lewis of the Parents' club of the Jackson, which stated that after a careful canvass It was foond impossible impos-sible to raise the money necessary to continue the school work, .and the school would accordingly have to close. At the Whlttier school a committee was appointed to secure funds, as in other districts. The earn condition that confronts Salt Lake schools Is manifest In various parts of the State. Not more than half the public schools will remain open through the entire term. The schools of Washington and Kane counties have already closed. Those in Juab and Wasatch Wa-satch counties, and in southern Utdh settlements will close Friday. In the larger settlements the schools will remain open the full term. |
