NEW YORK, April M.The stock exchange Initiated trading In 1U new building with an upward trend of prices which was fairly uniform throughout the list. Trading was on a large scale and many blocks of 1000 shares and upward up-ward changed hands In numerous stocks. The market developed slight irregularity, some stocks yielding when the Pennsylvania group reacted and others moving up vigorously. Manhattan, Manhat-tan, Metropolitan Street Railway, Smelting, Rock Island, Texas & Pacific and Erie second preferred .were in demand de-mand and rose 11. Pere Marquette gained 2 and Sloss-Sheffleld M. Northern North-ern Securtles on the curb sold up IS from .the previous sale on the dividend declaration and then reacted. Profit-taking was steady and carried the majority of the leading stocks among the Pacifies, trunk lines, grangers gran-gers and industrials a fraction under Tuesday's closing. Chicago Union Traction dropped 2M on the appointment appoint-ment of a receiver. Ice preferred rose 2, Pacific Mail 1 and New Haven a point. The market fell Into dullness on the reaction. Bonds were Irregular. Active stocks fluctuated a small fraction frac-tion either way with the drift If any. thing toward a lower level. very little stock was offering, but the flattening out of the opening strength discouraged holders. hold-ers. National Railroad of Mexico was unusually active and ic higher and the preferred 2 points. International Power dropped Z.c. A few of the prominent leaders sucn as St. Paul and Manhattan were bid for for effect on the list, but the response waa so slight that the buying movement waa abandoned. Prices eased off and the mr- ket resumed its sluggishness and dullness. Prices continued to show a settling tendency ten-dency on very meager dealings, but net declines did not reach as much as a point In any conspicuous stocks except Sugar and Pennsylvania. The general level of prices, however, was well below the close of Tuesday night. International Power fell 4 In all. Denver ft Rio Grande and Detroit Southern preferred gained a point..
