At a signal from their business agent 130 deaf-mute electrical workers in the Automatic Electric company yesterday inaugurated inaugu-rated the first deaf-mute strike on record. rec-ord. Three hours later the plant employing em-ploying almost 1000 persons, was closed down. A strike was declared In four departments depart-ments of the plant simultaneously, but the action of the mutes, who are the most skillful workers of the company, decided the officers o suspend operations opera-tions for a time. The mutes are members of the Telephone Tele-phone and Switchboard Workers' union. They were paid the union scale, but Joined with -the brass-workers and metal-workers, polishers and buffers and platers in a. strike for a shorter work day. |
