If any are received, re-ceived, will be referred. The nature of the charges or allegations set out la the protests will . determine the future action ac-tion of - the committee. If the charges are of a serious nature hearings may be ordered to determine the truth of the same. If not, the committee may pass upon them .wlthoutfnrther testimony than shown on the face of the protests. It is not known here whose names are signed to the citizens' protest, but It Is reported that twenty of the most prominent prom-inent cltlsens of Salt Lake signed It. It is understood that one of the principal princi-pal points made against Smoot Js that he Is a non-polygamlst, not an antl-polygamlst. antl-polygamlst. It Is said that the 'grounds of the protest are virtually as follows: First That Mr. Smoot. as an apostle of the Mormon church, is tied up with a body- of high , churchmen who have wilfully and persistently violated the Constitution by .Interference in the political po-litical affairs of the State of Utah. Second That he, in common with nls fellow-apostles and other high church officers, has encouraged and honored men who are living In polygamy. That this course has been pursued and these honors conferred, though In direct violation vio-lation of the solemn pledges on which Statehood was obtained. Third That Smoot's oath as an apostle apos-tle prevents him from consistently taking tak-ing the test oath, The protest Is said to consist of sixty jor seventy typewritten pages. Every charge made,, It Is reported. Is supported support-ed by evidence given by cltlsens, both Democrats and Republicans. |
