Show OMNIBUS STATEHOOD BILL STILL BONE OF CONTENTION IN THE SENATE WASHINGTON, Feb. . All indications indica-tions polnTto the conclusion of the de-,bate de-,bate on the Statehood bill during1 the present week, but tid one can tell at this time Just when In the week the change I- will corrie. or how it will come. If the plans of the Republican leaders who Oppose Op-pose the Statehood bill are put into effect, ef-fect, the Committee on Territories will bring in a substitute bill early in the week providing for consolidation and ' the admission of two States. ThU will V probably not bs done, however, unless I assurance can be secured) that the full 1 Republican vote can be secured for the consolidation, . " If this plan does not take shape, Senator Sen-ator Quay is likely to press his Statehood State-hood amendment on the agricultural appropriation bill, and a test of strength would ensue. The vote on this amendment will be very close if taken, and while the omnibus bill .advocates feel that they have a majority, they realize that it will not be so large as it would be on a direct vote on the Statehood State-hood bill alone and by itself. , There is now some talk of admitting only Oklahoma, but if this should be undertaken it will be only as a last resort, re-sort, and will be postponed until to ward th nd of the session. All Senators Sena-tors are becoming very restless under the present conditions and It la evident that they cannot long continue. . , The House will resume work on th appropriation bill this week. Monday Mon-day is District of Columbia day. Beginning Be-ginning Tuesday the appropriation bills will be kept foremost. The sundry civil and naval appropriation bills are both on the calendar. The former probably will be considered first. A special rule will be required for th consideration of the naval bill as it contains a considerable amount of le- glslatlon (especially that for increasing the number of officers in the service), which is deemed vital, and unless a special rule Is adopted all new legislation legisla-tion would be subjected to a point ot order. Friday is pension day, but if other thing press the leaders may decide de-cide not to give up the day to this class of business. |
