In discussing the proposed measure Senator Loose said today: "The recent wounding of Patrolman Heath in his battle with a gang of bandits ban-dits is a strong argument in favor-of Just such legislation. : "The pay of a patrolman and of other officials, who are charged with the duties of coping with the desperate elements of society is not commensurate with their responsibilities and the risks they must take. What does $75 or $100 per month amount to when a man knows that for the sake of the public peace he takes his life in his hands and runs the chance of, leaving his family without a provider and protector? . "It is not cowardice that keeps many a policeman from taking desperate chances. It is the thought that if he is killed his children may go hungry and ragged. Give him the assurance that if his life is lost his family will be properly cared for, and he will not then stop to count the cost," so that by Increased efficiency effi-ciency of his service the public will be the gainer in the end." |
