Show "fIDESPREAD INTEREST T IN THE LEILICH CASE Methodist Ministers Believe the Mission Superintendent Superin-tendent Will Not Contest His Removal. v Smith. Murray; Miss Catherine Peck, Illff : Mrs. Cordelia Robison of Davis Deaconess home, Salt Lake City. The capitals were used In the original letter. Four Petitions Circulated. Several petitions protesting against the reappointment of Dr. Leilich have been circulated among the members of the church. One was started at Provo. onent Payson; the third was circulated at Eureka, and he fourth was signed here. It is not believed that the Rev. Dr. Leilich will contest his removal from this field, as he will perceive that the field is a unit against him and that his continued presence here could only result in discords in the church. The pastors believe that he will tender his resignation at once and be appointed elsewhere. . . i The exclusive story in Saturday's Telegram, Tel-egram, giving an account of the differ-' ences existing between the Rev. J. L. Leilich and, the ministers of the Methodist Meth-odist church in his missionwhich cul- minated in a. demand that he be transferred, trans-ferred, aroused widespread interest. The protest which was sent to Bishop "Warren and -which will be taken up by the Central Pennsylvania conference, of which the Rev. Dr. Leilich is a member, mem-ber, is signed by every Methodist minister min-ister in, Mr. Leilich's missionary jurisdiction, juris-diction, save the Rev. Mr. Bickel. pastor pas-tor of the ' First Methodist church of Bait Lake. One Member Did Not Sign. The Rev. Mr. Bickel and the Rev. Dr. Leilich are-' members 'of the ' same con-' ference. It is understood that both men were antagonistic prior to their transfer V West, an tnat one ' t'le strong-Aft strong-Aft arguments against Mr. Bickel coming com-ing here was that he might oppose Dr. lleilich and obtain his removal. Tbls, it is said, is what prevented the Tlev. Mr. Bickel signing the protest though he heartily Indorses the letter in its every sentence. Copy of the Letter. The letter of protest which was sent the Rev. Dr. Leilich was as follows: Saturdav, Feb. 2S, 1903. Salt Lake City. Utah. Rev. J. L. Leilich. Supt. of Utah Methodist Kpiscopal Mission. Dear Brother: We sincerely regret that necessity compels us to inform you of the earnest prayers of ourselves and our people peo-ple that you sever your connection with the mission for the following reasons: First You have fulled to bring about a harmonious condition of the pastors and official boards with yourself. Second In almost every charge the con- gregations are depleted when you are announced an-nounced to hold quarterly meetings. The Quarterly conferences are dreaded, and they are only attended by its members in support. of their pastors. Third You must be aware in the language lan-guage of statecraft that you are PERSONA PER-SONA NON GRATA with practically every charge In the mission. Fourth We know how our people stand and find it impossible to bring them into harmony with your administration. Without further specifications, if you value the cause of Christ as a Methodist preacher, you Will acquiesce with our request re-quest AT ONCE to avoid other difficulties in-the work and further separation from those who have been your supporters. You well know that NO WORK can succeed suc-ceed with division. We have none other than the most brotherly feeling in this action, but must be true to the church and ourselves. Signed by George E.
