Show Rcsda's New Sclf-Dcstructiox. Society. . A new cult has been discovered in St. Petersburg. Peters-burg. Its disciples are to commit suicide on their thirtieth birthday. They maintain that the average duration of life is thirty years, and that any man who lives longer does so at the cost of some of his fellows. After the age limit is reached the candidates candi-dates for self-destruction voluntarily submit themselves them-selves to be buried alive in vaults to the accompaniment accompani-ment of solemn ceremonies by the other members. If there is anything more insensately silly than this for which a philosophic justification has been attempted, at-tempted, we do not recall it now. Leaving out of consideration the oft argued question as to whether or not there are ever circumstances under which death by one's own hand is not a crime, the main point in the contention of this new cult is that the man who lives beyond the average age does so at another's expense. And yet the average includes those who die in infancy and childhood. No man lives at another's cost, if by his own energy he supports sup-ports himself. However, the existence of the sect serves to point out one Valuable lesson no vagary of a semi-insane mind is so wild and unreasonable that it will not, when presented to humanity, find zealous and faithful followers. It yet remains for any man to become imbued with an idea and spend his days presenting it, and then fail to find followers who hail him as a disciple of truth. j |
