Show CURIOUS PHASES OF ELECTION. ': Some. curious developments were brought about by the late election.' One of the striking features . was the turning down of Mr. Gompers in the districts' Where he and' his lieutenants made their special efforts ef-forts to defeat certain Congressmen. The failed to defeat Mr. Littlefield in Maine, Speaker Cannon of Illinois and Mr. Gillett in Califprnia. The Republican majority was reduced in Maine because of the contest . over, prohibition. Speaker Cannon was re-elected with increased majorities and Mr. Gillett was elected Governor of California hands down. ' Over the whole country the Republicans lost no ' State except Missouri, and that was not a Democratic triumph but a Folk victory. - ' - .' The majority of Gov. Hoch Republican, in Kansas Kan-sas was reduced very greatly, but he was elected. He ..says his reduced majority is due. to the efforts of Standard Oil, that spent much money in its effort to defeat him. . In Iowa the majority of Gov. Cummins, Republican, Republi-can, was reduced from 70,000 to' 20,000. His enemies claim it was because of his insistence on a reasonable tariff revision, but on the other hand, Mr. Lacey, who was a stand-patter from the first, was defeated for Congress. . - Jtfew Tork elected a Republican Governor and lost nearly everything else." V" The Democracy was fairly overthrown in Colo-. Colo-. , rado, which is an indication that there was a determination deter-mination to down' Tom Patterson so far as possible. He was elected to the United States Senate six years ago,- partly through divisions in the Republican , party. The indication this year is that Colorado is tired of him. - - - ' The Republican party . won in Idaho through the solid vote of the southern Mormon counties.- " An Eastern paper, speaking of. the Idaho result says : "The issue was confused by the attempt on the part of Senator. Dubois to inject the anti-Mormon issue into the campaign,'. and thinks'that Gov. Gooding's - election "against a fierce and combined opposition ' is certainly one of the most notable events of the elections in the West." 4 - : - There was nothing especially notable about it Che anti-Mormon .issue carried the State triumph-Sntly triumph-Sntly until it got down to the Mormon counties, and they voted solidly for 'Gooding. The election was not won in Idaho by the Republicans, but it was won on the corner of State and Brigham streets, in Salt Jjake City. . : " , : Arizona did just what we predicted it would do when Congress passed the law making Arizona and Xew. Mexico one State, but' leaving the acceptance of - the proposition to these two Territories. New Mexico voted for. Statehood. Arizona, true to its instincts, voted against it, preferring to remain in the Territorial , condition rather than to be linked to a region that could always outvote it. . Oklahoma 8 first vote was Democratic for both State officials and member of Congress. There is no lesson taught by the election, except that it revealed possibilities of Democratic success in 1908, unless the work of Congress at the coming session renews the allegiance of the coutnry to the Bepublican party, because, while the Republicans 'carried every State except Missouri that they had 'carried before, in very many of them the majority was greatly reduced.
