Sweet was born in 1S78 near Chicago, where his father, a Civil war veteran, was a' well-to-do farmer and stock raiser. At the age of 5 his parents moved to Kansas, where his father served1 rive consecutive consecu-tive terms as County Judge, and where the subject of this sketch received his early education.- Like Thomas A. Edison and Andrew Carnegie, at the age of 16 he made his start in life as a railway, telegraph operator. Here, as in his later life, bis integrity, sound judgment and everlasting push soon won him rapid advancement advance-ment to more important positions. In the business world his record is one of achievement and his future is one full of promise. Mr. Sweet is interested in the American Falls Canal company, one of Idaho's giant irrigation irri-gation projects. His latest success was the organization and financing of an independent coal mining company in Utah, which will play an important part in the progress of, the State and have much to do with sorvinsr the coal shortage problem in this city. When fully operating, this company will give employment to a . thousand . men. .Associated with Mr. Sweet in this enterprise are several of Salt Lake's most prominent and successful business men. Mr. Sweet's genial nature has made him a host of Ioval friends, and his popularity was nicely exemplified at the American party convention held at the Salt Lake. theater September 22, where he was nominated for the State Legislature by a vote of 52 out of a total of 615.
