Since Saturday noon. organizations of the veterans have been arriving here on every, train, and by the time the first aessioa-of the encampmeul was tailed 'to'crset fivjComraander-in-Chief Charles E.. Miller of Ohio,' all. of the. eastern, middJe, Vet tern and southern States .'were represented bv big delegations. - Commander-in Chief Miller submitted to the delegates his report for the year. He reviewed bis personal work as com-' com-' mander-in-chief and said he was assured that there was a great awakening of interest in the organization, especially in the South, where many- camps now ace being formed. A tentative agreement has been entered en-tered into between Commander Miller and Commander Walker, of the Legion , of Spanish War Veterans of Massachusetts, Massachu-setts, providing for ,a consolidstion f the two organizations. It probably will be ratified at this encampment. The Massachusetta organization has about 4500 members. . . .Commander Miller recommended that, in the South, where there are many negroes ne-groes eligible to membership in the organization, or-ganization, separate ramps and seua-rate seua-rate departments be organized for white and for black members'. The financial condition of the organization, organ-ization, Commander Miller said, was good, all bills being paid and a balance bal-ance of .2400 in the bank. While it was not possible for the commander to report the precise membership mem-bership of the United Spanish War Veterans, he said it approximated 45,000. j |
