Show r THE EVTS EXACT MARINES. - 'Whenever trouble breaks Vont in any quarter of the. world, in Honolulu or Timbuctoo, there is a call for the marines. ma-rines. And they are generally on the spot, ready for business. "When the Chinese Chi-nese boxers rise, the Moroccan brigands break loose or the South American revolutionist revo-lutionist start to-pick a cHv or two to pieces in any quarter where American Amer-ican lives or property are threatere! we -read "the American commander landed a detachment of marines." The general publio probably knows less about the marine corps than it does about any other branch of the United States service. Tbey are not quite certain cer-tain whether it ia composed of sailors or soldiers, and generally conclude that tbe men are a combination of the two. Until recently tbe officers of tbe regular navy did not regard marine corps officers of the same grade a their equals in rank. But a recent decision of the Attorney-General . accords the marine corps officers the same stand-, ing as those of officers of tbe same grade in the regular arm". Veterans of the corps have seen service ser-vice ia every quarter of the world, and they , have generally acquitted themselves them-selves with credit to their corps' and country.- ' At present the total strength of the corps in officers and enlisted men .is 7443. although tbe full strength fixed by law is 9000. Jt is proposed to assemble as-semble -at convenient points 2000 of these for service in Cuba. As usual, they are the first troops on the scene, reaav for action whenever the orders are "flashed from Washington. Balti-more Balti-more Sun. |
