Mercantile company of Kaysville Kays-ville and head. man of the W. O. W. lodge No. 707 of that place,' is missing. The last seen of Mr. Barnes in Kaysville, Kays-ville, it is "claimed,, was last Saturday evening. It is known, however, that he took a horse and buggy and drove .to Ogden. from which point he purchased a railroad ticket to some point unknown.- '. , . ; '! 1 A eareful examination of the books ofthe concerns-in which Mr. Barnes" is interested fails to reveal any shortages, though it is claimed that he . has between be-tween $4000 and $5000 outstanding against him on personal notes. Saturday 'morning, it is claimed, Barnes instructed his wife and daughter to visit his wife's mother, who lives at West Jordan, in -this county. He told his wife that he. had. some business to attend to afnd that- he would come to her mother's home on Sunday morning. He failed to keep his promise and Sunday Sun-day afternoon Mrs; Barnes returned to Kaysville. when she arrived home she' found a note on the table signed by her husband in which he stated that he was tired of Kaysville and that he had gone away. He gave no other reason for going. It is alleged, however, that there is the proverbial "woman in the case." In this case, it is claimed, a divprced woman, of whose children Barnes was appointed guardian, was the stumbling block. " ; . - Barnes' duty as guardian required him to pay the woman $35 per month alimony, for the support of. her two children, the money being furnished bv the' divorced husband. - It is claimed I that Barnes - made more trips to the I house than was absolutely necessary in his capacity as guardian of the children. chil-dren. . Peonlfl talked, aa neonle will, and finally some of the friends of Barnes took him to. task.. He declared that he was innocent of any- wrongdoing and that his visits were of a purely business nature. ,. . x About three weeks ago" it is alleged that the divorced, husband and Barnes had a meeting that was far from friendly. friend-ly. The man took his two children away, declaring that the mother was not a fit person to have them in custody. cus-tody. A short time later, to be exact, on October 10 of this year,- the woman sold her furniture and .left Kaysville.' : She informed her friends that she was going go-ing to .her -parents in Texas. The talk was. renewed connecting her -name with that of Barnes. Barnes, however, apparently ap-parently lived hapt)ily with his wife and daughter ' until he sent them to West Jordan Saturday morning. . As soon as 'Mrs. Barnes returned home Sunday night and iound the note she informed John . B. Barnes, father of the missing man. ' Mondav mornintr when the bank was opened a note was found from the miss-lag miss-lag man: The closing sentence of the not was as follows: . "The books, cash and notes are all straight. No trouble. -Good-bye."- B. W. Barnes was one of the best known and most popular men in Davis county. He was born at Kaysville and had snent all his life there. The fact of his having outstanding notes for. the amount above stated is not worrying those to whom he owes money, as he left valuable real estate as well as business interests, both, in Kaysville and other parts of Davis county. " " ." Friends of Mr. Barnes, both in Davis and Salt Lake counties, are loth to believe be-lieve that he has committed any crime. ' They claim that the talk of the neighbors neigh-bors became such that he felt that he could not longer be hat"v in the eity in which he has lived all his life and for that reason left. ' r |
