Show THE PANAMA CANAL , At last an encouraging report comes from Panama. Pana-ma. More dirt was excavated in February than in any other month since the canal was first started. . From the famous Calebra cut 168,410 cubic yards were excavated at a cost of 61.8 cents per yard, and the work is steadily and constantly improving. im-proving. In October last 50,940 cubic yards were excavated, at a cost of fl.23; in November the cost was fl.03 per yard. It was still less in December and January and last month it was reduced to 62.8 tents per yard. This indicates that a system has at last been established, that harmonious work has been inaugurated, and that at last the Americans Ameri-cans are doing real work without any symptoms of failure. . We hope that after all a' tide level will be determined de-termined upon, and that it will be driven with all tenergy. to completion. ' |
