Show Lively battle will be witnessed in trisco Frankie Neil and Dick Hyland hook tip at the San Francisco Athletic club Thursday night. The sports are beginning begin-ning to realise that Fighting Dick has more than an outside chance with, the ex-champion bantam-weight, and the odds have steadily receded from 4 to 1 to 10 to 6. with Hyland the short ender. Both men. are in the pink of condition, and the fight followers expect one of the greatest battles ever fought among the little fellows. Both men are fighters pure and simple. sim-ple. Neil has never been known as a clever boxer, and Is always willing to take a couple of wallops to land one, and that one is usually a peach. Fighting Fight-ing Dick also has the sleep producer in either hand, as is clearly shown by his record of thirty-three knockouts out of fortv-three battles. It is the first bat tle for a long time where there has heeri no disagreement' over ths rules. The men are both enamored of ths infighting infight-ing game and .have.' agreed to fight, punch as punch can, each man protecting protect-ing himself at all times, and the referee Is not to break ' the men nor interfere lth them until they have ceased hitting hit-ting and are hanging on. This-style ought to produce a battle which will keep the audience on Its feet from the tap of the gong for the first round until the finish. By the way, Hyland'e name Is not Hyland, but William Hurine, and the following story Is told of his first appearance ap-pearance In the ring?- About two years ago a lad named Hyland was matched with Joe Hall at an amateur show In Frisco, but failed to show up. When this became known a young, pale-faced kid stepped up and asked to be substituted substi-tuted for Hyland. "What's your name?" asked the matchmaker. "Willie Hurine." answered the kid. "Are you registered with the Amateur Ama-teur association?" was the next question. ques-tion. "No, but I think I can fight some," answered Willie. The matchmaker tried to register him in the association, but found he did not have the requisite two bits to become a member in good standing, and so he was shoved on under the name of Hyland, Hy-land, who was registered, and he has been fighting under that name ever since. Both Neil and Hyland have had the best of sparring partners for this bout. TCeil has been working- out with Young Corbett. and their bouts have not been of the easy going order, either. Hyland has had Spider Welch to teach him foot work and cleverness, and Battling Nelson Nel-son has had several bouts with the ex-amateur ex-amateur and has shown him a lot of tricks about Infighting, notably the use of short arm overhand Jolts when breaking from a clinch. Hyland caught the knack in' three rounds and was as tickled as a kid with his first pair of red-topped boots. Hyland weighed 122?4 pounds on Monday, and will be strong as a lion at the weight which calls for 122 at 6 o'clock Tuesday. Nell is about five pounds lighter, and. can fight at 116 pounds without difficulty. |
