His deputies declare he will have to buy when he hears it: When Deputy Sheriff Jenson stopped at the door of Judge Morse's courtroom court-room this morning he was addressed by a youth about 8 years old. "I want to see the Sheriff," he asserted. as-serted. "Come with me," said the deputy sheriff. "O. K.," said the youth. The Sheriff was out when the couple arrived and the boy was ushered into the private office. He was asked what he desired of the Sheriff, but he refused to show his hand. After much protesting protest-ing the deputies decided that Deputy ! Sheriff Axel Steele should assume the role of Sheriff. "There Is the Sheriff, out there," Jen-son Jen-son told the boy. "You had better go and see him."- "Tell him to come and see me," commanded com-manded the youth. Forthwith the presence of Steele was required in the front office. Tugging at the famous seven-inch mustache and playing the role of Nicholas II., Steele looked down at the child. "Are you Sheriff Emery? inquired the boy. "Yes sir." "My name is ," declared the hoy. "I am the son of Mrs. . and mamma wants to borrow $4 until tomorrow." "What!" exclaimed the deputy, and then he assumed the monarchical dignity. dig-nity. "Well, son, a Sheriff never has any money. All he gets Is tickets to bum shows, gets Invited to Jail weddings. Invites to necktie parties, and is the friend of the 'pug' along about the time something is to be pulled off. The court attaches are wondering who will make good, the Sheriff or the deputy, when the boy returns. |
