Show SENATOR DUBOIS TALKS -:i ON MORION QUESTION that the Institutions of thl country mutt prevail throughoat the land; and. Second, there should be an amendment to our constitution wide enough In Ita scope to place plural marriage and po-, lltlcal control by the church entirely out of the realm of possibility. . T share the opposition to constitutional amendments generally, and resent any encroachments upon- the right of the State, but when a State says, we are unwilling; un-willing; to suppress these crimes because a majority of the people belong to sn organisation which uphold them, this great American Government of ours ought to step In. as It stepped In In the past. In the Territories, ana wipe out this blot on American escutcheon. These results can only be accomplished, however, through the earnest, persistent co-operative work of the highest type of humanity In the world; - the Americas womanhood you here assembled 4n to-, operation with the other magnificent organisations or-ganisations of the noble women who are . doing so much to elevate our country, and you alone can eradicate this evil and' avert the awful fate which awaits' every polygemist child yet unborn. ' WASHINGTON. March lk Senator F. T. Dubois of Idaho spoke before the Mothers' Congress last night on "Polygamy "Po-lygamy and the Power of the Mormon Hierarchy.- . He mas Introduced by Mrs. Frederick BchotC. president of the '.congress, who paid a high tribute to him and also . to Senator ' Thomas K earns of Utah. In part Senator Dubois Du-bois said: Mortnonism today Is a decided. If not the greatest, single menace which confronts con-fronts us as a people. It Is not a new subject, for because for more than nrty rear various States of the Union and he United States Itself have been try-irg try-irg to settle It and bring the adherents of this faith Into agreement and concord with our laws and our civilisation. The president fit the " Mormon church and more than one-half of the apostles are openly living In polygamy today, and the testimony taken before th committee shows that several of the apostles have entered Into polygamous marriage since the Issuance of the manifesto. It Is known that new polygamous marriages are being constantly entered Into. The politic U strength of this organisation organisa-tion has vastly Increased until now. In .addition to absolutely controlling Utah, they hold the balance of power In Idaho and Wyoming, and are spreading over and threatening Oregon and Nevada, and have a following of no Inconsiderable Importance Im-portance In other Western Statea. Their great aim is political power, so as to protect pro-tect them In their polygamous practices. It Is impossible now to elect a Senator from Utah, Idaho or Wyoming who will openly oppose the method or practices of the governing power of the Mormon church. I do not mean to be Understood by this statement that the Mormon hlerarch Is strong enough to select the Senators In laftDD mnu vv joining, out i uu j iiwi they are sufficiently powerful to defeat tny one for the United State In either of those States If they desire to, and I will aay In addition that they have a disposition and will exercise the power to defeat any one In either Idaho or Wyoming for the United States Senate, for Congress or for Governor who will oppose them In the exercise of their political po-litical power or who will undertake to punish them for their polygamous practices. prac-tices. Notwithstanding the testimony which Joseph F. Smith gave before the Senate committee, no one has the temerity In Utah to undertake to prosecute him, and it la utterly impossible to enforce the laws of Utah against him. as With the power of this organization spreading so rapidly over the entire Western West-ern country, carrying with It everywhere the poison of polygamy, our only nope Is in the good women of the United States. Our own home people don't condone these offenses. They resent this blot and stain as much as you do. yet through the tremendous tre-mendous power, commercially and politically, polit-ically, of this hierarchy. It Is able to make Its alliance with the politicians so strong and so subtle, end so many personal Interests In-terests enter Into the equation that they seem to be helpless. We must and do appeal to you. Had It not been for the tremendous, unceasing, persistent efforts of your own magtneen organisation, under the splendid leadership leader-ship of your untiring and determined president. Mrs. Frederick 8choff, Mr. Darwin R. James. Mrs. Margaret Dye Ellis and Mrs. Teunls S. Hamilton and the exalted Ideals of American motherhood mother-hood and womanhood everywhere, there would not even have been an Investigation Investiga-tion of the right of Apostle Smoot to a sest as a Senator of the United States, and the horrifying facte In relation to thla organisation would not have been known to the people of the country. Vou don't appeal to Congress and petition peti-tion them for the passage or defeat of this or that tariff law: you do not interfere with Congress In regard to the annexation annexa-tion of foreign countries: you do not bother them sbout the currency or any other material questions. Tou have a right to appeal to them, however, and to petition them in regard to questions which affect the home life. It is your duty and It Is your province. Your Instincts are unerring in these latter, for your whole life Is wrapped up and centered In your home. It must be kept pure and sactifled. The church is growing vastly rich, or rather the hierarchy is growing vastly rich. It takes one-tenth of the production produc-tion of Its people, and It uses it in such secret ways, and In such Investments as to five to It a widespread power In financial and commercial clrclea. . A more dreadful thing has not appeared In our American civilisation than the tithe svstem of the Mormon church. Millions Mil-lions are at the command of a corrupt leader with which to maintain his power and work further corruption. Some of the apostles cling to him for this reason, because be-cause they can help their financial standing stand-ing In the world. Practically the apostles are all polygamies, polygam-ies, there being but two or three exceptions, ex-ceptions, snd this probably because these particular men did not get into polygamy before the present controversy arose. Unquestionably the leaders desire to have all the prominent involved In polygamy, so thst they shall look to the church for association and protection. The manner In which the leaders evade responsibility for this is almost Incomprehensible In-comprehensible to those who have not studied the system. For instance, an apostle denies that he knows snything of polvgamy. and yet In every day'a association asso-ciation with his fellow leaders he cornea Into contact with It. and he well knows how It Is being accomplished. In aa much as he Is not afraid of being betrayed by any one who may have knowledge that he has knowledge, he can defy any inquisition in-quisition In this country. For Instance. It may be true that Reed Bmoot is not a polygamist: it may be true that he haa not solemnised plural marriage: mar-riage: but he surely knows all about the polygamous practices of leader of the church and of tne plural marriage practice prac-tice of those who have been selected by leaders of the church for admission Into this order. I ought to close, but must say a Jew words about the Mormon people, the followers. fol-lowers. The most of them practice the vlrtuea of Industry, thrift, sobriety, honesty hon-esty and outside of polygamy, personal virtue. Their articles of faith seem to them to represent all of morality and the revelations which their leader proclaim from time to time seem to them to set them above all other people In the world. Here and there among the following a break la occurring, the false pretensions of the leaders are being exposed and men of Independent mind and atrong personality per-sonality are diaavowlng any supreme allegiance to the leaders, and are giving ftatriotic devotion to our country and ta Inatltutions. I have endeavored to portray the situation. situa-tion. Now It is pertinent to Inquire what Is the remedy. I would say: First It is the duty of the United States Senate to so act on the case of Senator-Apostle Senator-Apostle Reed Smoot as to serve notice on the polygamous head of this church t'.nd his apostle, thst tney must live within with-in thelawsjthatheNatlonls |
