Show All Owe Appreciation to Industry It Makes M kes Prosperity for Everyone I Businessmen of Salt Lake City held an Appreciation Luncheon Wednesday at the Hotel Utah in honor of new and expanded industry in the state The luncheon was very well attended It was a distinct rec recognition on the part 0 of the business leaders of the city of the great importance of industry to Utah today and of the far greater importance importance importance tance it is almost certain to have to to- to morrow morrow It is appropriate that businessmen should hould express appreciation for industrial industrial industrial indus indus- trial growth in our state The great 40 majority of the business establishments 0 of this city are dependent directly or orI I indirectly on trade But you do notS not S have trade on the top of Mt o or in the center of the Great Salt lake desert Trade is dependent on people If there were no people in Salt Salto o Lake City in Utah and in this intermountain intermountain intermountain inter- inter mountain region there would be no trade and no businessmen to attend luncheons o And what brings the people who bring the trade Two things agriculture agriculture cure ture ture and industry with the emphasis in Utah properly today on the latter as the great hope for future growth and progress It is therefore appropriate that the businessmen of Salt Lake City express their appreciation to industry and pledge their support to efforts to add to and expand industry in Utah o Dr Adam S. S Bennion one of the speakers at the luncheon cited a few figures which bring home the great growth already achieved industrially in our state He said since 1940 employment employment employment employ employ- ment in unemployment insurance covered covered covered cov cov- ered industries in Utah had gone from to and that the value of new industrial establishments since the I beginning of the war was equal to all of Utah's assessed valuation 20 years ago It is Industrial expansion which has been responsible for most of Utah's progress in the last decade We Ve must look largely to more such expansion for our future development Several speakers at the luncheon emphasized that Utah has many advantages advantages advantages which encourage industrial de de- One is our abundance of natural resources Another is our alert intelligent people who make excellent workers Still another is Utah's fine climate and natural beauty which make this state one in which people like to live But we have our shortcomings too One speaker pointed to shortages of water and power Others stressed the danger in an unfavorable legislative and tax climate They warned that overly burdensome taxation or unduly restrictive restrictive restrictive tive regulatory laws will frighten away prospective new industrial investors or even drive away established plants In this connection it was good to have Governor-elect Governor Lee pledge his complete support to legislation taxation and administrative administrative administrative ad ad- policies which will encourage encourage encourage en en- courage and stimulate industry in Utah Its It's a good thing to have a luncheon expressing appreciation for industry Its It's a good thing to remind ourselves of the basic importance of industry to the states state's prosperity and welfare It is only regrettable that every citizen of Utah could not have attended the luncheon lunch lunch- eon eon because because every citizen in one way or another in greater or less degree owes appreciation to Utah industry It makes jobs trade markets and prosperity prosperity prosperity pros pros- for all of us |
