L Impound Impounds j Pinball Machines m Cr Crowther Directs Surprise Sweep 1 On Taverns T Tobacco Stores j jV V p VIn In a series of surprise raids ordered by the Salt Lake county grand i jury police cr crows crews ws swept through Salt Lake City Friday Fiday afternoon impounding pu and pinball ma machines s. s The Thc raids directed by Police Chief L L. C. C Crowther on orders from the grand erand jury were conducted simultaneously at 2 15 nm mm The S Salt lt Lake c county u ii sheriffs sheriff's h office also was reported engaged In similar raids throughout the county area outside the city limits Raids were reported under way in Magna and along State street as far south as the county limits Nin Nineteen teen Salt Lake City police officers riding in trucks and palice police police po po- lice cars swooped down on a series of taverns cigar stores ind other establishments carrying out the jurys jury's directive In each pla place e the police slapped large stickers on the machines and boards The stickers read Impounded by order of the Salt Sail Lake county grand jury Do not r remove move or disturb this object or orthis orthis orthis this seal und under penalty of la law Signed by Foreman The impounding stickers were signed signed- by Harry G. G Calton Gallon foreman foreman foreman fore fore- man of the grand jury Where the machines and boards were impounded police officers were stationed in the establIShments establishments establishments establish establISh- ments with instructions to wat watch h them and not let anyone touch them Chief Crowther said he was given a a list of establishments by bythe bythe bythe the grand jury with to impound the machines and boards in each of those those- establish establish- ments He did not disclose the names of the establishments but it was known that the raids were widespread throughout the city and were taking place in various sections Two popular cigar stores in the center of of the business s section were visited by the police pollee promptly at pm p.m. and others were entered a little later Give Gh No o. o R Reason o. o There was no indication from the grand jury as as to the reason r ison for the raid The jury has been in session during the past week but has not riot announced ced the trend of its investigations Among the places raid raided d at the outset of the surprise drive were the Mission Cigar store S. S Main Ace Billiard Co S. S Main Mecca Billiards S. S Main Lettieri's S. S Main Jims Jim's s Hamburgers E. E 2nd South the Mint cafe 27 21 E. E 2nd South United Cigar store 2nd South and State the Horseshoe 49 E. E 2nd South Chesapeake Buffet 27 V. W. 2nd South and the Pit Bar 22 W. W V. V 1st South the Mission Cigar store said there was no warning of the raid The police pollee just walked ed in and placed the notices on the machine machine machine ma ma- chine he said The patrolman on duty said he was told to stay on guard until the police picked up the ma- ma ma ma- chines A small pinball machine in the front room of the Mission was not impounded
