Show Trade-In Cheating Game of Auto Gyps New Car Dealers Swindling the Public With Tricks. PHILADELPHIA. Unscrupulous new car dealers, already cheating the public through under-the-table bonuses for 1947 automobiles, are making huge added profits by offering offer-ing ridiculously low prices for vehicles ve-hicles they accept as trade-ins. In addition, these same new car dealers quickly amass even more mpney from these deals by "wholesaling" "whole-saling" the used cars for prices far in advance of trade-in appraisals. In single deals, the chain of profits has netted dealers far more than $1,000. As complaints about gyp practices in the industry continued to pour iln, trade sources indicated they were aware of the "multiple profits practice," particularly among dealers deal-ers who cut down the number of used vehicles offered for resale to the public. A North Philadelphia man, an innocent in-nocent witness to one of the deals, reported in detail their workings. His friend, the victim of an unscrupulous un-scrupulous dealer, was given $35 as trade-in allowance for a 1941 automobile, auto-mobile, valued on the open market at about $1,050. But, the witness said, the buyer was willing to take the ridiculous trade-in allowance because he wanted want-ed a new car. In turn, the dealer who gave the $35 sold the 1941 automobile at wholesale to a used-car dealer for $700. The used-car dealer was ready and willing to accept the car at that price "with no questions : asked." The buyer was gypped. Besides these practices, complainants com-plainants said that new gyp angles are cropping up among dealers, particularly par-ticularly where they offer a 30 to 90-day 90-day warranty or guarantee with the sale of a used automobile. Where I the warranty is offered, the dealer I pledges to pay half the cost of any I repairs within the prescribed pe ; riod. But, informants reported, when they take their cars back to such I dealers several days after they have i been purchased and complain of engine, en-gine, spring or other troubles, the ! dealers' service shops report that such parts are not in stock. The "run-around" is given the ! unususpecting buyer until his guarantee guar-antee or warranty has expired. Then, the parts appear In stock. But, the buyer has to pay the full price for repairs. |
