Show PLAYGROUND NEWS by Bailey J. Santistevan, supervisor super-visor of the Copperton Baseball Base-ball Playground. H1NGIIAM LEGION TO PLAY IN SEMI FINALS AT HINGIIAM TODAY Our American Legion team defeated de-feated Provo Legion Sunday 12-5, 12-5, before a very large crowd. Pitchers of both teams were very wild. Our base running and defensive de-fensive play was just a little better than Provo's. We only got two hits, but they accounted for five runs in the first inning and this was just enough to give us the advantage and enabled us to take chances. Bailey Santistcvan Jr. hit a triple into right field that scored two runs and Jimmy Jim-my Epis followed with a hard double into right center that accounted ac-counted for two more tallies. This Friday (today) at 5:30 p.m. we will play Helper Legion Le-gion team here in the Utah state semifinals. The winner of this contest will play the winner win-ner of the Brigham City-Ogden game for the state Legion championship and the right to represent Utah in the Western Sectional tournament. Unless we can get more hits and our pitchers can master a little control, I can't see where we have much of a chance to win. However, sometimes boys surprise themselves and here's hoping something like this will happen. Howard Otteson, Billy Taylor and Amadeo Pino compose the hard hitting outfield for the Bingham Yanks. Gregory Tyson is doing a great job as a catcher for the Copper-field Copper-field Juniors. Though small, he has a lot of fortitude to stand back of the batters and receive the pitches of Max Salazar. Briggie Knudsen has cast his lot with the Bingham Air Force team. This team is tied for the league leadership with the Copperton Cop-perton Giants. Elias Roblez, catcher- for th-Bingham th-Bingham Yanks is having a great year, both at the plate and in the field. John Lewis Matthews has joined join-ed the Copperton Giants and is playing third base and in the outfield. Pete Leyba is the spar plug of the Dinkeyville Juniors. He is playing second base. Bobby Pullan is back with the Copperton Juniors and has helped help-ed his team fight back to the league leadership. Ray Contreras is pitching and playing third base for the Dinkeyville Dink-eyville Juniors. Pat Montoya at shortstop for Dinkeyville also has been playing great ball. Gary LaComb has joined the Copperton Giants and is hitting the ball when hits are really needed. Albert Gallegos, Richard Anderson An-derson and Ned Miller are the mainstays of the Bingham Air Force. These boys are playing bang-up baseball for this team. The Copperton Juniors defeated defeat-ed the Bingham Yanks Thursday Thurs-day to take the league leadership leader-ship of this quarter. These two teams have battled on even terms all season. The Bingham Yanks however, have won the first and second quarter championships. Jimmy Mathis, left handed first baseman of the Bingham Yanks is doing a nice job fielding field-ing and hitting for his team. Warren Sumnicht, Kent Chris-tensen Chris-tensen and Rudy Pino form a-bout a-bout the best outfield in the Junior Jun-ior league. These boys play for the Copperton Juniors. See you next week. |
