OCR Text r. r T Nine Deaths in Five Days TARS TAR'S traffic safety program has blown up UTAH'S U this month Nine deaths in the state the thelast thelast I last five days have hiked the Utah toll so far farin in August to 20 compared with only 15 in the same ame period of August last year C A combination of bad luck and carelessness on the part of motorists motorists perhaps perhaps also some up let in enforcement must enforcement must be responsible for this relapse in the states state's drive for safety on streets and highways In the hope that an analysis of the situation may call public and official attention to the danger and result in a reawakening of safety consciousness The Telegram presents the following following fol fol- lowing facts C In the two preceding summer months Utah C has 5 deduced fatalities compared with 1938 In InJune InJune June there were 16 deaths this year compared to 17 in 1938 in July there were only 10 deaths compared to 21 t The state as a whole exclusive of Salt Lake 4 and We Weber r counties has saved ONLY ONE LIFE M over the same period d last year To August 26 1939 there were 92 deaths in Utah to August iL 26 1938 there were That represents a savIng sav say t. t Ing of 35 lives But Web Weber r has saved 7 7 Salt Lake county 8 and Salt Lake City 19 19 a a total I of 34 As a result of this fatality record rec rec- ord the states state's total decline In deaths has C dropped from 36 per cent on August st 1 to only 28 per cent on August 26 F Salt Lake city and county despite their ex excellent excellent ex- ex showing for the year in comp comparison rison with the rest of the state stat haven't done very well this C month Neither had any traffic deaths throughout through- through v out July But in August the city has had three compared to three in the same period last year C and the county has had three compared to the same number last year Percenta th their ir I T 1939 fatality reduction has suffered also also la In the county from 57 51 per cent August 1 J to 47 per percent percent cent emt August 25 in the city from 63 per cen cent August 1 to 53 per cent August 26 Weber co county now goes Io s to the head of the If class with no fatalities this month this this- and still sun holding its record of a 54 per cent decline over 1938 So much for facts Dry and statistical as they m may maybe Y be The Telegram hopes motorists and of officials officials fi- fi dais will vIll give them at least least- fleeting attention Utah is today faced with a crisis in its traffic safety program We must halt this current wave of fatalities if it we are to finish the year with any kind of a satisfactory record for lor the state as a whole If U we all recognize the danger and I work together we can stop it it NOW NOW
