Show GEMMELL BOXERS SHOW UP WELL AT POLK) FIGHTS In the biggest benefit sport show ever held in Utah, and before be-fore an overflowing crowd of approximately 4000 boxing fans, Gemmell club boxers threw their punches at the dreaded polio in .the South high school gym Wednesday Wed-nesday evening. Bingham Canyon's own "Fighting "Fight-ing Hurtados", Junior, Pancho, Arthur and Alfredo, were by far the most popular on the 14 bout card. The Salt Lake Tribune article ar-ticle concerning these brothers is as follows: "The real feature of the program was the bout between be-tween the tiny Hurtado brothers. It was a cute display of boxing and wrestling between Pancho and Junior with little brother Arthur as referee. Alfredo, who was stricken with infantile par- alysis, also appeared m a fast exhibition ex-hibition against cultured Robert Oseguera, to show his appreciation apprecia-tion for what the polio fund had done for him in helping to restore re-store the use of his leg." The fan's silver shower that followed the first one minute round netted net-ted Pancho, Arthur and Junior $28.00. Gemmell's other three main event boxers all won their fights. Victor Roblez, 118, intermoun-tain intermoun-tain AAU champ, gave Ted Ol-sen Ol-sen of West Jordan a boxing and punching lesson in winning his fight. Joe Espinosa, a two-year holder of the AAU crown, caught a round-house right from Steve Paulos in the first round, but came back strong in the last two rounds with a series of right hooks and crosses and left jabs to beat his taller rival. Raymond Montoya, Gemmell's welterweight welter-weight AAU champ and runner-up, runner-up, won a good, hard, clean decision de-cision from Ken Bennion of West Jordan A.C. The bout featured both boys as hard punchers with no let-up. Montoya's ring generalship gen-eralship in the last round was very impressive to the fans. According to Ken Shulsen, Gemmell club boxing- instructor, the benefit was promoted jointly joint-ly by the Salt Lake Tribune and Telegram and Elks lodge No. 85. There were no expenses whatever. what-ever. All proceeds will go to the Infantile Paralysis fund. Al Ablett, Gemmell club manager, man-ager, acted as emcee. Al did a fine job and was one of the most popular officials of the entire show. Coach Shulsen reported that all his boxers are in fine sh.ape and were very gentlemen-like gentlemen-like at the affair. The Gemmell club was publicly given sincere thanks and appreciation awards by the benefit show heads. : o |
