Show LOCAL YOUTHS TOUR AIR BASE by Lt. K. J. Earth -Salt Lake Air Base It was the biggest nine-hour day in the lives of patriotic-young Marion S. Carter and his air-minded air-minded pal, Robert IVie, both of Bingham Canyon. The two lads, each aged 14 and the closest of friends, spent Saturday Sat-urday at the Army Air Base, Salt Lake City,' as the guests of Colonel Frank W. Wright, Commanding Com-manding Offieer,"-aa the boys had a great time every minute of their visit. "When I'm old enough," said Marion when he was presented to Colonel Wright, "I want to be a flight leader." "That goes for me, too", Robert remarked, "but I'll gladly settle for any job that'll, let me fly in one of Uncle Sam's army planes." Marion and Robert were lucky lads, indeed, to get an opportunity opportuni-ty to visit the Air Base. Civilians, of course, are not allowed on the Air Base and the Bingham Canyon Can-yon boys happened merely to get a break denied to all but a very few; because they wrote President Presi-dent Roosevelt months ago. Marion and Robert left home at 7:15 a.m. Saturday, and were back home at 4:45 o'clock in tho afternoon presumably with tall tales to tell. . : Aerial gunners, bombardiers, radiomen and armorers arm-orers the air-minded boys saw them all. . When Marion and Robert got off the bus, they were met by Staff Sergeant Merrill T. Smith, who acted as the boys' escort while they were on the Base. During the morning the boys were driven over the Base. They saw planes, the low pressure chamber, an orderly room, barracks, bar-racks, a gas chamber and as they said "a lot of husky soldiers". sold-iers". Sergeant Smith took Marion and Robert to eat in one of the mess halls, and the boys did a first-rate job with the knife and fork. "Eating turkey is one of my best tricks," said Marion, and Robert, his sidekick, laughingly nodded full agreement. Army Air Base Headquarters drew up a complete schedule for the two young airmen of the future.. fu-ture.. The boys . left Bingham Canyon in a bus at 7:45 a.m., and arrived at Salt Lake City at nine o'clock. Upon their arrival at the Air Base, they were met by Staff Sergeant Smith who later described de-scribed them "as keen,,clean-cut kids, and sharper than tacks". From 9:30 a.m. to three minutes min-utes past three in the afternoon the time they left the Air Base both boys observed many a visible vis-ible sign of activity at the Air Base. They boarded the bus for the trip home 3:30 p.m. and were back in Bingham Canyon at 4:45 in time to wash for supper and tell, "the folks what a fine trip we had." Robert is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alt Ivie and Marion's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Carter. The Carters .and Ivies live in Copperfield. , 1 |
