OCR Text YOUTH WOUNDED BY PATROLMAN DURING PURSUIT Victim Mistaken for Burglar Thinks Officer Is Bandit Mistaken for a burglar Rex Christensen Chris Chris- lensen 18 of Ephraim was shot that and seriously wounded early Wednesday by a Salt Lake police officer at Seventeenth Sev South and Windsor streets The youth was shot b by Patrolman L L. B B. Gifford when he mistook the officer for a bandit he said and attempted at at- tempted to flee Officer Gifford Giford was in uniform The shooting occurred at a. a m m. while Patrolman Gifford and Special Officer Scott Anderson were patrolling patrol patrol- ling hog the district near the oft burglarized burglar Hawthorne drug store 1650 Ninth East street The officers reported they saw Christensen walking near Seventeenth Seventeenth Seven Seven- South and Ninth East streets As they alighted from their car they said Christensen hid behind a tree When the officers approached the youth ran and Patrolman Gifford fired ired one shot after him when his commands to halt were unheeded The bullet struck the youth in the right side of the back and emerged from the left groin Christensen was removed to the city emergency hospital where he was treated by Dr Henry ItalIc Raile dep dep- uty ity health commissioner and later was vas removed to L L.
