Show GENEVA, KAISER COKING COAL SURVEY ASKED V The Bureau of Mines is negotiating nego-tiating with Geneva Steel Co. and Kaiser Co., Inc., on a plan whereby where-by each company would provide $125,000 to finance exploration of possible new coking coal deposits on public lands in Carbon county, Utah, Interior Secy. J. A. Krug announced. Under the plan, work of exploration explor-ation including drilling, would be done under supervision of the geological survey and bureau of mines. This project is based on the knowledge that there is a limit to the known supply of coking coals serving the steel industry of the far west and that new deposits de-posits must be located and developed de-veloped if operation of steel plants at Geneva and Fontana is to be prolonged indefinitely. Work contemplated would determine deter-mine locations, amount and quality qual-ity of coking coals available in the area north and west of Sunny-side. Sunny-side. If the two steel companies agree to finance the program, federal bureaus will carry on all necessary neces-sary geological work, select drilling drill-ing sites and contract- with private priv-ate operators to do the drilling. The bureau would analyze and test coals discovered to 'determine carboizing properties. Drilling sites already have been selected in the Sunnyside coal field, so work could soon be under way. |
