Show GRANDSTANDS AT FAIR GROUNDS BEING INSPECTED The state engineering commission commis-sion began .a complete test of the structural soundness of the state fairgrounds grandstand last week. The inspection was requested by Sheldon R. Brewster, state fair board manager, after he had been informed that the contractor for the grandstand was the same one who built West Jordan elementary school which collapsed allegedly 'due to "extremely poor workmanship." workman-ship." The fairgr o u n d s grandstand was constructed in 1925 and a year later the roof was blown down in a strong wind. It is braced brac-ed by reinforced concrete beams similar to those which collapsed at the West Jordan school. Ray H. Leavitt, engineering commission chairman, said a complete com-plete "top to bottom check of the grandstand will be made." "We intend to use all facilities of the .state road commission testing test-ing laboratory. Samples of the concrete mix will be taken to determine de-termine if its content is correct. Blocks . of concrete from the grandstand will be given pressure, pres-sure, strength and porosity tests and the findings will be made public," pub-lic," he said. Criticism was limited to the construction aspects of the grandstand. grand-stand. The design apparently is all right. |
