Show MARY J.FILEY OBSERVES 83RD BIRTHDAY In tribute to Mrs. Mary J. Fin-ley Fin-ley who observed her eighty-third eighty-third birthday anniversary at her home Saturday, many friends, relatives, rel-atives, and neighbors called to extend birthday greetings during the day. She was presented with many lovely birthday gifts and received a large number of cards and messages mes-sages extending felecitations for her birthday. During the afternoon her daughters welcomed the callers and served light refreshments. Mrs. FJnley, prominent civic and church leader of this community, com-munity, was born in Cottonwood, near Salt Lake City, January 27, 1857, daughter of Solomon D. and Lydia AnQ Thorn Chase. She has spent practically her entire life here. She was one of the first school teachers in Springville, a member mem-ber of the early board of education, educa-tion, a past president of the local Ladies' Republican club and the Springville Red Cross. She was for some time a member of the Utah County board of D. U. P. and is a charter member of Camp Springville D. U. P. She is an honorary member of the Home Culture club. She was instrumental in having hav-ing a pioneer mother monument, done by Cyrus E. Dallin, placed on the city park and in preserving one of the city's oldest landmarks, a Cottonwood tree on which was placed a bronze marker. Among her literary endeavors is an account of events in the settlement of Springville from 1850 to the present. She was married to A. W. Fin-ley, Fin-ley, December 22, 1876, and the couple observed their sixty-first 1 wedding anniversary in December Decem-ber 1937. Mr. Finley died January Jan-uary 9, 1938. She has eight sons and daughters, daugh-ters, John Finley of Olympia, Washington; Mrs. Rena Roylance, Mrs. Lydia Palfreyman, Mrs. Eva Hanson, Mrs. Bert Broesbeck, Mae, Bess, and Arthur Finley, Springville; Spring-ville; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. |
