Show CLADIUS HOLMES OBSERVES 87th BIRTHDAY Complimenting Claudius William Wil-liam Holmes, resident of Utah since 1873, on the occasion of his eighty-seventh birthday anniversary, anniver-sary, a family dinner was held Sunday at the home of a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holmes. A son of William and Cecelia B. Holmes, he was born in Norfolk, Nor-folk, England, April 19, 185 4. He came with his parents to Utah in 1873, as converts to the church. The family lived in Salt Lake for five years,, and Mr. Holmes assisted as-sisted with installation of the first telephones in the city. Mr. Holmes recalls many interesting inter-esting experiences, among them the fact that as a young boy in England he traveled in various parts of the ocuntry with his parents, par-ents, who were in the theatre business. busi-ness. He appeared in minor parts on the stage and as a youth sang in several concert halls in and near London. He married Ellen Johnson in Salt Lake City, July 20, 1875. About two years later the couple came to Springville to make their liome. Mr. Holmes worked in the cement business and also farming. Later he operated a shoe repair shop here for a number of years. His wife died in 1926 and in March, 1929, he married Mrs. Rada Kendall of Lehi. He lived at Lehi 10 years, retiring at the age of 85 years. His second wife died in 1939. He has seven sons and daughters, daugh-ters, Frank and Bert Holmes of Springville; Claudius W. Holmes, Jr., Jesse and Clarence Holmes of Salt Lake; Mrs. Nellie Ellis, Modoc Mo-doc Point,, Oregon; Mrs. Hilda Gorman, Oakland, Calif.; also 2 9 grandchildren, included among whom are three pairs of twins, and 36 great-grandchildren. |
