Show What 9l Ue GUatnlt&i Off Ganm&ice By PAUL C. MINER, " During the past few months while so many of our young men and women are in the service of their country, probably the greatest great-est emergency that has confronted our community is the problem of labor, especially on the farms and in the fields. To meet this emergency the Chamber of Commerce established a cooperative plan with the City officials, the County Agricultural Department, and the U. S. Employment Em-ployment service, whereby an employment em-ployment service was set up in the office of the Chamber of Commerce. Com-merce. The cherry raisers, the raspberry growers, the apricot and peach producers, and the tomato farmers and the cannery called for help. Hundreds of calls have gone out through the office phone; different dif-ferent organizations have been contacted, a personal canvass has been made of the tourist cabins and the trailer camps, and although al-though all the demands have not been met yet 432 requests have been filled with local help. However, How-ever, it was found there was not enough help here in Springville to save the cherry crop so by special arrangements a bus was run from Eureka bringing approximately 4.0 boys and girls each morning, and contacts were also made with San-tiquin San-tiquin so that a truckload of pickers pick-ers were brought from there each morning. At the present time, the high school is cooperating in trying to save the tomato crop by 25 girls and six boys reporting to the cannery each morning until this extreme emergency is over. Through this effort, not all demands de-mands have been met, but hundreds hun-dreds of bushels of fruit have been marketed which otherwise would have spoiled. According to law, no industrial organization can employ a girl or boy of school age unless an employment em-ployment certificate is obtained from an authorized ' agency. The Chamber found, in this case, that unless some solution could be found, no boy or girl could go to work in the cannery, or for the steel company, or the contracting organizations, or the stores, cafes, etc., without first making a special trip to the School Board office in Spanish Fork for this certificate. Imagine the gas, rubber, and loss of time. By special arrangements, the Secretary of the Chamb authorized to issue i these worl V tificates during the summe of this community were saved extra expense and time ls The labor problem has not h solved, by any means, and alf?" dications are that there will L greater shortage next s " m a but a step has been madeS?' following recommendations a?! suggested for your consideration 1.
