' m And as I watch the glittering sun sink in the Galilee, A trail of glory marks the shore, along that inland sea. ' M I see the Shepherds, they who watch their sheepfold through the night, The friendly sky their sheltering roof, the stars their only light. ' I see their bearded faces, fleeced clothes, and shoes so brown, 4 Their gentle eyes, so watchful, turned toward the distant town. S And now a ladened beast appears, drenched in the evening glow, By a man's hand led so gently, so carefully, and slow. Tm Joseph's hand that guides the beast, a woman forms the load; fjjj The sunset seems to shine anew, in glory on the road. - j fj& They travel! Joseph's anxious eyes now scan each hostile gate, 35? m He begs for shelter for his wife, his plea made all too late. ss W Alas, the lovely Mary, the virgin mother's pain ss! M Is heeded not, and Joseph turns toward Judea's hills again. J fjij Lo! A stable, where the lowly kine rest) warm amid the luiy, jll Wjf Falls on his vision, and he begs the servant let them stay. M W His prayer at last is granted. Here, the Son of God is born, jj& W A star of radiance shines, and lights the sky this blessed morn. M jf "Glory to' God," the angels sing, while shepherds bow their heads jjjt In fear and reverence of the star, zvhose glory o'er them sheds. M They go now to old Bethlehem, the star doth point the way. , $f The Wise Men's camels' clomping feet resound in wakening day. $5 f? . & jf They, too, have seen the star of which their tomes long since Iiave told, M They find the King of Heaven, throned in humble manger old. sjS )0 While angels sang, the Shepherds, the Wise Men join the strain, j W "Glory to God, on earth good will and peace to man again!" jtfy |
