'I C A i . ; Douglas Smoot Basketball Captain Receives $400 Elk's Scholarship Douglas Smoot, son of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Smoot, has been awarded a $400 scholarship by the Elks clubs, it was announced this week. The scholarship was the first of five given by the Elks to total $1000. Mary J. P -yack, South High School, Salt Lake City was awarded award-ed second place with $200; Kathleen Kath-leen Buckwater, American Fork High School won third place of $150; Richard N. Bosley, Box Elder Ihigh school, fourth place of $135, and Karen N. Joseph, South high school, fifth place of $115. All are senior students. Selections were made from 91 applications submitted, with judging judg-ing done on the basis of scholarship, scholar-ship, extra curricular and oii'; school activities, perseve . e, leadership, general worthinea T and Americanism. Mr. Smoot, as first place Winner, is eligible to compete for the Elks National Foundation scholarship award which includes a total of 15 awards ranging in value from $!i00 to $900 each. He is a good athlete as well as a good student and recently won all-state basketball basket-ball honors. The presentations of the awards will be made at various honor day programs at the schools later in il the season. |
