Show I ' '- " ' ' ' ' " ... i Top Region Game Crucial to Both Clubs; Kickoff, 2:30 For the second straight week, the Springville Red Devils are in the Region Three grid limelight with another crucial contest scheduled between two half and the half ended on an incompleted in-completed pass attempt on the following play. The third quarter was a battle of defenses and neither club penetrated pene-trated into pay territory. Springville took the ball at mid-field mid-field in the last quarter and with Bird, Watts and Warren again making nice gains and linemen Burt, Beardall, Graves, Haymond, Waite, Eves, Priel and Porter playing play-ing outstaning ball to clear the way, the Devils marched to another an-other score and this time Friel didn't miss, making the score 19-0. Warren chalked up his first t.d. of the year and contributed some fine running. American Fork scored after two completed passes and a nice run by Froughton. The attempted kick was blocked. Standout players for the Devils in the A. F. game would be hard to pick but the speedy and deceptive decep-tive running of Donald Watts stole the hearts of most fans while the playing of Billy Bird and Dean Warren contributed in no little way. Walker also , looked good. Plaudits go also to line smasher Haymond and Beardall, inter-sperced inter-sperced with sneak attacks into the rear lines by Rodney Burt. Porter and Friel pulled in for nice tackles and Waite, Eves, Graves were effective in their departments. depart-ments. Coach Pehrson, who is being be-ing assisted by Dee Sanford, was pleased, with his team performance and particularly happy that no injuries were sustained by either club. The Devils this week will test the strong Spanish Fork Dons on the Devil greensward beginning at 2:30. Friday's contest has all the earmarks ear-marks of a "natural" in that both teams are evenly rated, and both teams must win the Friday game to keep in the running for the Regional football title. Payson .nd Lincoln both share top honors with Springville and Spanish Fork with all four clubs having dropped one contest. Picking a winner in Friday's contest would be rather difficult since the teams are somewhat different dif-ferent in backfield and line respects. res-pects. Springville has a power-laden power-laden line and not too heavy a backfield while the Dons have a stronger backfield than perhaps their line. However, with Bird, Region Three W L T Pet. In one of the best-played 'football 'foot-ball games of the season, the j Springville club marched to a 19-6 victory over a well-balanced and highly-respected team from American Amer-ican Fork last Friday, here. A. F. opened the game with a good kick-off to Springville's 35-yard 35-yard strip and Donald Watts reeled off one of his many beautiful runs of the day to chalk up a first down. After a penalty on the visitors, Billy Bird, Dean Warren and Watts took turns in running the ball to the Forker 7-yard line from where Bird plunged over for the initial . score. Friel's boot hit the crossbar cross-bar and fell short. The quarter ended after both teams had lost the ball on fumbles and made no appreciative gains. With the Springville line doing yoeman work, the Devils held A. F. on their own 35 from where they kicked. Bird made another of his many first downs and speedy Donald Don-ald Watts carried the ball for 20 yards on a beautiful run. Bird made another first down to the 12-yard tsrip and Watts carried it over standing up on the next play. Again the extra point kick went wide. American Fork came back late in the second quarter to get to Springville's 18 on one of two attempted pass-plays of the first |
