Show Springville Man Seriously Hurt In Plane Mishap Darrell Hatch, 25, former Springville man, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hatch of this city, is at the Veteran's Hospital, Salt Lake City, with an inward skull fracture, which he suffered in a plane accident, while hunting deer, near Salmon, Idaho. He had not regained consciousness Wednesday With a companion, Hatch left a ranch to look over high mountain land for deer. The plane, which he piloted, is believed to have struck a "down-draft," which sent it into a tail-spin, turning it up-side-down and landing it in a tree. As the plane turned over, the companion's com-panion's strap broke, letting him fall to the ground and in the fall, he suffered a fractued arm, nose and severe head injuries. Darrell was knocked unconscious and hung head-down from the plane for more than four hours. Other hunters in the vicinity came across the men and built fires to keep them warm. They were eight miles from an airport and they had to be removed from the scene of the accident, to the airport on horseback. The accident occurred at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 and the men reached the hospital at Salmon Friday evening. eve-ning. The deer season opened a week earlier in Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Hatch went to Burley, Idaho where Darrell works as a pilot and instructor at the Burley airport, when they heard of the accident and remained until he was removed to the Salt Lake City hospital last Thursday. While Darrell escaped with no (Continued on Page Two) Springville Man Is Seriously Hurt 9 (Continued from page one) broken bones, his condition was rendered more serious in the fact that he had hung from the plane for so long, attending physicians said. He was given first aid at the scene of the accident by a physician phys-ician who was brought in by plane and horseback, and much credit is given the attending physician as well as the hunters in saving the men's lives. There was about six inches of snow on the ground at the time of the accident. |
