The post office began accepting savings in 1910, chiefly to accomodate accomo-date people who distrusted banks. However, the government's guarantee guar-antee of bank deposits up to $10,-000 $10,-000 has to a great extent eliminated elim-inated the need for postal savings departments, which cost an estimated esti-mated $2,000,000 annually. |
