Show Smoot, Haymond, Schouten Brothers Win Firsts at Y Meet 9 f straight sets from Cardon, Lehi, 6-3, 6-4. JeTry Thorn and Lynn Crandall, tenth grade doubles team lost in the finals to South Summit, Sum-mit, 6-1, 6-3. Schouten Shines . . . Warren Schouten, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schouten, was one of very few athletes to take two firsts in the Y track meet. Schouten Schou-ten setup a fine recoi'd by taking both the 100 and 220. He won the century in 10.3 and the furlong in 23 flat for Class B schools. He also anchored Springville's 880-yard relay re-lay team which won the first race of that event in 1:37.6. Other members of the team included Keith Burrows, LaMar Holt and Don Watts. Billy Bird took 3rd in the shot put and fourth in the discus, to total up a fine showing for SHS track and tennis stars. www Springville high school athletes came out with shining colors at the BYU Invitational meet held last Friday and Saturday at the Y. Doug Smoot and Phil Haymond stamped themselves as two of the finest tennis players in the ranks when they repeated their last year's fete of winning the doubles crown at the "meet. Both players went through their four rounds handily. They won over Madsen-Shana'of Madsen-Shana'of Manti 6-0, 3-6. 6-0. Their second round was against Wilkinson Wilkin-son and Dunford of BY high which they won 8-6, 6-4. Third round victims were LitUeford and Fox of Lehi, 3-6,6-3, 6-4. They tipped Williams and Terry of Hurricane in the championship sets 6-1, 6-4. Ninth grade championship honors hon-ors went to another Springville athlete, Bobby Schouten who took |
