Show Heat Victims Seek Relief In Nature KANSAS CITY, Mo. (U.R) Sweltering hundreds have sought relief, from 100-degrees temperatures tempera-tures in an immense natural refrigeration re-frigeration plant unknowingly created by cement workers near here. Known as the catacombs of Jackson County, the series of tunnels tun-nels formed in the search for cement ingredients, constantly emits a blast of cold air, registering register-ing 70 degrees and lower. The Missouri Portland Cement company, owner of the property, long has been aware of the cooling cool-ing properties of the caverns and has piped the air to its offices nearby for a natural air conditioning condition-ing system. The tunnell mouth is above the highway, but the density of the cold air forces it to "the ground level cooling occupants of cars parked along fhe road. The air is cooled bp dripping water from cold springs and the cold damp rocks within. So cool is the blast of air that many accustomed to 100-degree temperatures close their motor car windows part way when the current strikes them. |
