Some of the early contractors contrac-tors were Milan L. and Myron L. Crandall, William Sumison, W. A. McKenzie, Abner Thorn, Fred Smith, Ed Brown, John Sumsion, Daniel ' Sumsion, Gibson Condie, H. T. Reynolds, Neif Straw, and others. 1 I Springville reminiscences, taken from the histories of early pioneer residents and , other sources: The first company of people under the direction of Aaron Johnson John-son to arrive in Springville, Sep-temtor Sep-temtor IS, 1850, included the following: fol-lowing: Aaron Johnson, Myron N. Crandall, John W. Deal, Amos S. Warren, and brothers, and Richard Rich-ard Bird, and families. oOo The first wells were dug in Springville in the spring of 1852. Members of the first band organized or-ganized in 1853 by William D. Huntington, were, Richard and William Bird, John W. Deal, Robert Rob-ert Johnson, Henry Roylance, Thomas Snelson, George and William Wil-liam Clyde. oOo ; The spring of 1856, succeeding the "grasshopper war," was one of scarcity; many of our people never tasting bread for months men came regularly to the pasture to dig thistle roots for food; pig weeds, and red root were used as greens and sego bulbs were much sought after. Flour went to $24 per hundred and was scarce at that price. oOo - The first city fair was held in Springville in the fall of 1856. oOo In 1858, while money was plentiful, plenti-ful, its buying capacity was small, for instance, youths' boots were from $12 to $16 per pair; calico and domestics, 75 cents per yard: nails, 60 ..cents per pound, and a window pane, 8 by 10 inches, 60 cents. The Washington school house was built in 1892 at an approximate approxi-mate cost of $17,500. , , oOo- On August 20, 1891, the frist newspaper was started in Springville Spring-ville .under the title, "Springville Independent," with Newman H. |
