Show Wife Collapses On the Stand at Husband's Trial OLYMPIA, Wash., Nov. 21 (U.E) Elizabeth Berry, pretty 27-year-old wife .of Dr. Kent W. Berry, collapsed on the witness stand today to-day under: the state's hammering cross examination at the trial of her husband on charges of kidnaping kid-naping and torturing Irving Baker, 37, former coast guard officer. Berry, middle aged Olympia physician, accused Baker of ravishing rav-ishing his wife after a house party last Fourth of July, which Baker denied. As Mrs. Berry came to her husband's defense for the second day, the state attempted to get her to admit previous intimacies with other men. Berry, on trial with three other men, beat, tortured and attempted attempt-ed to emasculate Baker with a pair of pliers in a gravel pit the night of August 19, state witnesses witness-es testified. Deputy Prosecutor J. W. Graham Gra-ham conducted the relentless cross examination of dark-haired Mrs. Berry, former University of Washington coed. "Didn't the doctor slap you and acuse you of having illicit relations rela-tions Willi other men?" Graham asked. "He slapped me, but he just asked who did it," Mrs. Berry answered. I "Hasn't this whole thing grown up out of the doctor's jealousy?" "No, the doctor has no reason to be jealous." "Didn't the doctor in a note to you that he was leaving saying you embarrassed hi'in at the Shrine conventnin in Los Angeles?" An-geles?" "No." |
