He is resented by Manuel, a Portuguese fisherman. Harvey demands de-mands that Captain Disko's fishing schooner put back for New York. But this is impossible impos-sible as the catch will take three months, iiarvey makes himself very obnoxious but finally, his adoration for Manuel changes him completely. Manuel teaches him to fish arid instills in him the principles of good sportsmanship. At last the "We're Here" is filled with fish. The two racing vessels were off Cape Sable and moving down across Broun s Bank. Everyone was in oilskins. Manuel grinned and said to Harvey. "Watch, little fish we have some l'un now." But Harvey was frightened and all the men were tense. The "Jennie Cushman" was bearing bear-ing down and the "We're Here" wasn't giving any quarter. "Lord's soke, Disko," Salters cried, "Here she comes." Then, with just an inch between them, the "We're Here" scooted across in front of the bow of the Cushman. Walt Cushman bawled out as they passed, "1 had the right o' way, you old goat." Disko's gesture was derisive. "You must have mislaid it sornewhere's. You aimin' to collect insurance on that wreck of yours?" A little later both vessels were running cn the same tack, the "We'ra Here" creeping up on the "Cushman." Excited and happy, Harvey made for the gangway. In the forecastle, Manuel was seated at a table, figuring figur-ing from a little notebook. "We're going to pass them soon." Harvey told him. "Well, first thing, I go to church and burn candle for my father's birthday. Then I buy candle for myself for bad thoughts I have on this trip." He snapped his fingers. "Hey, little fish but what you do on shore? You talk to your father on telephone, tell him you live and Jiappy, eh?" Harvey's whole face dropped. "My father?" he said vaguely. Manuel hnckled. "By Golly. I bet he leave his skin, I think. He hug you to pieces and take those pieces back home again." Suddenly, Harvey blurted out, "But I don't want to go home, Manuel. I want to stay in Gloucester vith you and come out fishing with you all the time." It would be all right, Harvey thought. Dad had his business and everything. He'd never miss him. From the gangway, there came a loud halloo. They were passing the "Jennie Cushman." Harvey and Manuel rushed to the deck. "Well," Disko told them gleefully, "We've run old Walt ragged. He's strikin' both topsails. Now I'll tell you what you do, Manuel. You go aloft and stand by to put the foretops'l in gaskets." I j jS,:ye4 " -f. "-I Humming to himself, Man- Harvey thought, "Some- . Wl started up the rigging. thing's wrong up there." t Suddenly, Harvey .glanced up at the topmast. There had been a loud cra-a-ck. "Here she go. Watch out below," Manuel cried. But as he Scabbed at the rope, he was pinned fast to the rigging. Then, with a "urrible noise, the halyards, stays, sheet and tack came tumbling into 'he water. "Manuel! Manuel!" Harvey cried wildly, running with the liners to the rail. Disko began to shout orders. Hawey's heart squeezed together, as Manuel said, in a' strangely weak voice. "No, Disko ... I jammed in. Wire stay ..." He Spoke Jjapidly in Portuguese. Doc whispered to Disko. "He says he's good as l,d. His chest and legs are stove in." Manuel called louder, "Don't you Put dory over, you hear, Disko? I don't want nobody near me." Through Us sobs, Harvey cried, "We'll save you, Manuel. We'll get you out." Come closer little fish," Manuel said hoarsely. "Manuel he watching. ou be best fisherman ever. I very happy to go now. I go fish with my lather in dory in Heaven" the men had been working feverishly to cut him loose.
