Show DERN DEFEATS ALBERT MILLS Hans Steinke Tosses Powers and Christensen Within Hall" Hour By, MAC JOHNSON Ira Dern may be the idol of Salt Lake, but he wasn't the idol of Pork Ro-She Monday night. But idol or no idol, Ira Dern wasn't idle and thereby hangs a tale. Ira Dern submitted 230-pound "Lord" Albert Mills to ninny indignities in-dignities during that first 13 minutes. min-utes. He socked him on the head, he threw him in the ropes and slammed him on the canvas dozens of times. Then Ira clamped on a headlock and had the first fall. Mills, emblematic of a famous Mills bomb, exploded in the manner man-ner of such a bomb, and took his fall with a body slam after three minutes of fighting. Dern came back strong and polished pol-ished off Mills nicely in 10 minutes min-utes with a body slam to take the match. Papiano and Tiger Nelson failed to put in an appearance so the mighty Hans Steinke, ranked as one of the six best heavyweights in the game, took on Jack Powers and Sherm Christensen. He said he'd throw both men within an hour and did it in 28 minutes. First he toyed with Jack Powers for 15 minutes and then tossed him with a body press. Powers danced around the ring, but his 220 pounds seemed puny beside the giant Steinke. Steinke had just finished off Powers and was wiping the perspiration pers-piration from his face when Christen Chris-ten leaped into the ring and was on him. The attack was unexpected, unex-pected, but the Hun wiggled out. Blinking his eyes, Steinke stolidly kept after Christensen and finally took his measure with a body press in 13 minutes. Christensen butted Steinke off his feet several times and in making another ram at him, found Steinke set. He bounced bounc-ed off like a rubber ball hitting a stonewall, with Steinke on top for the fall. Lou Petro, Provo, decisively pounded out a technical knockout over PeeWee Pearson, American Fork, in the third round of their scheduled four round bout. Petro cut him down with slashing rights to the head. He knocked Pearson down for a count of nine early in the third round, and had Pearson on the floor as the bell ended the round with a 4 count against him. Pearson was bleeding badly, so Referee Arcade Pierce awarded Petro a technical knockout. Petro Pet-ro weighed 133, Pearson 146. A tiny red-head called "Pinky" luid Tony Bailey, both weighing 76 pounds fought to a draw in the curtain raiser. The scrapping youngsters elicited an enthusiastk hand from the crowd. |
