Legion To Fete Capt Orvil Anderson Former Local Resident Captain Orvil Anderson, pilot of the stratosphere baloon, explorer. ex-plorer. II. and a former' resident of this city will be the principal speaker at a specially arranged banquet in his honor at Memorial hall, at 7:30 p. m. Tuesday, May 5. Captain Anderson's visit here will be in the form of a home coming when he will renew old friends hips and visit relatives. The local post American Legion is sponsoring the banquet under the direction of Commander F. C. Packard. E. A. Strong will act as toustmaster during the evening. The address of welcome will be given by Mayor George A. Anderson. Harold Alleman will also give a short talk. A splendid musical program is being be-ing arranged for the occasion and the public is cordially invited in-vited to nltpnrt Tickets for the affair may be secured from either of the local drug stores or from members of the Legion general committee headed by W. G. Phillips. That the event will be well worth while is evidenced by the interest with which Captain Anderson's And-erson's visit is anticipated by outstanding out-standing educators of the vicinity. Dr. George H. Hanson, geographer geo-grapher of the B. Y. He also states that those who would enjoy meeting Columbus, Peary or Byrd will also enjoy meeting this great nationally known explorer. Captain Anderson enlisted in the army aviation corps in Aug. 1917 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1918. Since he has had a wide experience with airplanes and non-rigid airships. Among some of his achievements are helping to organize the army .airship school at Langlcy field; flying the A i, the army's first non-rigid air ship; 'commanding 'com-manding the non-rigid TS 10 in the first successful anchoring of an airship at sea, using a canvas can-vas sea anchor of his own design; copilot of the 1934 National Geographic Geo-graphic society army air corps stratosphere flight and pilot of the 1935 expedition. Captain Anderson lives at Kelly Field, Texas, where he is an instructor in-structor in the army aviation school. He will appear in Provo under the direction of the American Ameri-can Legion May 6. |
