O.'s Russian LOS ANGELES, No. IS (I'.H) Freddie Steel, world middleweight boxing champion, snapped lethal punches with both hands last night to technically knock out tow-headed Gus LesnevUch of Hackensack, N. J., in the second round of a scheduled 10-round overweight bout. The Tacoma, Wash., titleholder brought 10,400 spectators to their feet at Olympic auditorium when he dropped Lesnevitch three times opening two severe eye gashes before his opponent's handlers threw in the towel after four minutes min-utes and 45 seconds of fighting. Steel floored Lesnevitch never off his feet in four years of fighting fight-ing before the round was a minute old, after opening the Russian's right eye with a cut that showered his head and shoulders with blood. Lesnevitch, 163, outweighed the champion by five pounds. He was frankly disappointed with his effort, ef-fort, and in the dressing room contended he vas not hurt but could not continue with both eyes .shut. |
