Show Floor Tile Made At Springville SPRING VILLE Special interest inter-est is being shown here in the manufacture of tile to be used on the floors of the SS0.OOO high school art building now under construction. The tile project developed de-veloped under the P. W. A., was begun as an experiment but has now resulted in the manufacture-of manufacture-of a high grade and very satisfactory satisfac-tory product. , Following a month's prospecting for suitable material in Utah county coun-ty from which to manufacture the title, V. O. Hafen, under whose supervision the work is progressing, progres-sing, found a red clay soil on mountains near Thistle, which he combines with a grey clay found ; near the southeast limits of Springville, and with a combination combina-tion of chemicals turns out a fine tile. The finished product has a natural coloring of tan, rose and a deep red and will undoubtedly be an added attraction to the artistic art structure. With the manufacture of about 5000 of the floor tile, the project has passed the experimental stage and two new ovens have now been ordered to increase the capacity and efficiency of the work. When the new ovens arrive, about 2000 tiles il lbe turned out daily. It is estimated that it will take about 140,000 of the 4 by 4 inch blocks to cover the entire art building floor. The tile work will furnish employment em-ployment fbr nearly a hundred men -throughout the winter. A work shop is now being built near the art building where the tile will be moulded, baked and dried. |
