Show County Fair Seen As important Educational Agency For Public Pointing out the benefits of a fair, County Agent S. R. Boswell today encouraged agriculturists to enter exhibits in Utah county's annual fair here Thursday, Friday Fri-day and Saturday. At the same time he invited everyone to attend, assuring an outstanding array of exhibits as Well as some first class entertainment. enter-tainment. Explaining the value of a county coun-ty fair, Mr. Boswell made the following fol-lowing statement: "To me a fair is an educational institution. Its purposes are to i teach farm people and all exhibi- tors better practices in agriculture ! and home economics, and to show I to city people some demonstration of qualities and quantities of foods which are available. After all is j: said and done, we are all depend-l! depend-l! ent on the farm for food and fiber. I; It takes 24 out of 100 people to j produce our food. The other 76 j are dependent on the farmer. I I have learned to think of a fair as a bis mirror in which a county sees itself. "Fairs are old institutions. A story is told that at Leipsig, Ger- j m?ny, a fair has been held annu-'. lally each year since the birth of Christ. You will note that in a few years they will hold their 2,000th fair. "When fairs and shows serve a , useful purpose they deserve the i support and respect of every forward for-ward looking citizen. Modern people peo-ple demand other things besides a fair to encourage them to attend. at-tend. Hence the addition of concessions con-cessions and rodeos, etc "HoTse-piilling contests are designed de-signed to be educational. Not knowing how the public will respond re-spond or what the weather will be, promoters of fairs have found them to be a very hazardous business. busi-ness. "Fairs are outstanding social events. You go there to see your friends who are interested in the same line of agricultural endeavor as yourself. The women show their handicraft and get a chance to see their friends in a different differ-ent atmosphere. "The fair is also a clearing house of progressive agricultural ideas. Fairs are the show windows of the county. "Fairs are not for the purpose of making money. It is a well grounded principle that educational education-al institutions are not to make money. They must be financially uiccessful however. "They must be educationally vuccessful. They must be socially luccessful. The county fair should be the climax of all community fairs or other activities through-lut through-lut the year. It comes at the best !ime of the year for most crops to be at their best. "The best is then selected for the state fair which of course is the close of the fair season in the state '' |
