Show U.S. PATROL" TO PROTECT COAST LINE Protection of Neutrality Aim of Roosevelt's Action BY LYLE C. WILSON United Press Correspondent . WASHINGTON, Sept. 6 (U.R) President Roosevelt today to-day ordered a patrol by destroyers, de-stroyers, coast guard vessels and airplanes extending several sev-eral hundred miles off the American coastline. The patrol pa-trol is to gather information on any activities of belligerent vessels ves-sels in a step to protect U. S. neutrality in the European war. To Scout Ocean The patrol was begun immediately. immedi-ately. Two destroyers and two coast guard cutters have left their bases to scout the Atlantic ocean olf the northeastern American coast. White House Secretary Stephen T. arly, disclosed the president's order. He said that many of the 110 destroyers which have been laid up since the World war will be rccommissioned and used for the work. President Roosevelt does not contemplate any censorship of press or radio for the present at least, Early also said. Meanwhile the president is developing de-veloping a far-reaching emergency defensive program leaving little for congress to do but debate neutrality neu-trality act revision. The president feels that practically prac-tically everything necessary except changing the neutrality act can be accomplished under powers he already al-ready possesses. He appears less eager for a special session than had been anticipated. |
