Show FIVE INDICTED BY GRAND JURY NEW ORLEANS. July 18 (U.R) The federal government redoubled re-doubled its investigations into manipulations of the Louisiana gtate government and of Louisiana Louisi-ana federal office holders today while five of the men made great by the late Huey P. Long were up for arraignment before a United States commissioner charged with mail fraud. Administration of the 1937 sugar act was the newo.;t channel for federal entrance into Louisiana Louisi-ana affairs. The investigations was annuunced in Washington by Attorney General Frank Murphy. A federal investigation of re- j ports on wide-spread violations ot i the federal oil regulations was j believed reaching a head. J The federal gland jury, which yesterday indicted five of the late Kingl'ish's closest friends, was continuing con-tinuing its investigation of tile alleged misuse of WPA materials and labor by state officials and ot other phases of state affairs. The five Long men, whose Influence In-fluence and power continued and was even enhanced after then sponsor's assassination, will plead before a U. S. commissioner to indictments in-dictments which charged that they used the mails to defraud the state of Louisiana of $75,000. The five men were Seymour Weiss, who was the night manager man-ager of a local hotel when he first met Long and owns that hotel and several others and is rated a millionaire; Dr. James Monroe Smith, wiio was- the head of a tiny college when lie met Long and who is under 24 state indictments charging him with defrauding Louisiana State university, uni-versity, of which Long made him the head, of $100,000; J. Emory Adams, nephew of Smith's wife; Monte E. Hart, official of an electric elec-tric company which has received many contracts from state and parish governments dominated by Long office holders; Louis O. Lesage, "contact" man of an oil company. |
