Show SAVAGE WINS FROM KERNS COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., July 19 (U.I?) Ven Savage of Salt Lake City defeated Jack Kerns of Denver 2 up here today to successfully suc-cessfully defend his Trans-Mississippi golf championship in first round play. Savage, who won the "Trans-Miss" "Trans-Miss" title at Lincoln, Neb., last year, short a blistering sub-par 68 to overcome the stubborn challenge chal-lenge of the Denver youngster. The defending champion took a birdie three on the 430-yard 18th hole to win the match and eliminate elim-inate Kerns from the championship champion-ship flight. . Rufus King of Wichita Falls, Tex., who won medal honors yesterday yes-terday with a sub-par 69, entered the second round with a five and four victory over Fred Newton of Denver. P. M. Aitken of Lincoln downed Vern Bowlde of Salt Lake City, four and two. Ray Lowell, Jr., of Colorado Springs shot a two-under-par 68 to eliminate Eddie Held ot Denver, Den-ver, former Trans-Mississippi titleholder. Ed Kingsley of Salt Lake City, who qualified with U 71 yesterday, finished two up on Vic Johnson, Jr., of Pueblo today. |
